Rollout Issues

UMTS networks have rollout issues, the main one is a large lack of significant demand for 3G mobiles at the present time. A base station is required every 100 meters for Video on demand to be offered Ė impossible in urban areas. There is also the competition from Wi-Fi connections. UMTS will not be profitable for the first few years of its implementation, because of network operators having to purchase expensive licences and equipment, the huge outlay it a big gamble. However it is believed that 3G will take off and UMTS will become the global roaming standard in the near future.

When this will happen isnít clear, but if the current trend continues it could be some time. The worlds population needs to wake up to 3G, once the boom starts, it will be difficult to stop.
