Intro to UMTS

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System is the next generation in mobile data communications, compared to the second generation, the third generation offers fast, reliable, always on communication. UMTS is the networks choice because itís the easiest road to evolution from existing 2 and 2.5g systems. UTMS is a key player in the 3G standard, defined by the ITU. Because of existing GSM network, UTMS provides a cost effective upgrade, and this is important, because GSM consumers represent 850 million users in 195 countries, which is over 70% of todayís digital mobile telecommunications arena.

120 licences have been applied for worldwide for UMTS, or more specifically its underlying access technology, WCDMA. This is because WCDMA offers greater capacity for concurrent consumers, and high spectral efficiency.
